Since our nations fight for independence, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has played a vital role in the development of our country. The first known Corps project in the Baltimore region was the building of Fort McHenry, built in 1799 on a small island in the Baltimore harbor at the time of the Quasi-War with France. It was named for Secretary of War James McHenry.
